Honestly I didn't like the old formula because it didn't make sense, I rather they use a formula like this:
((magic base damage + magic dmg reforge + (total magic attack*magic constant))*masteries)*charges
With the assumption that 1 magic dmg = 4 magic attack we would get the following to add up:

It would allow magic to be used fully again for different reasons such as using Icebolts to pick off weak enemies, Lightning bolt to hit/stun/knockback one or multiple enemies, Firebolt to damage+knockback one target. Fireball to deal massive AOE damage in an area, Ice spear to freeze enemies + chain explosions upon death, Thunder to stunlock + damage, and well Hailstorm is a glorified firebolt.
TL;DR Bunch of calculations based on a non-existent formula
I didn't include blaze because I didn't understand how the 0.06 magic constant and the blaze formula works, but anyways this is pretty decent damage with just base stats + masteries + S6 wand. Factor in enchants, reforges, equipment, potions and we have... slightly above the old formula in terms of damage depending on skill but it makes more sense with this formula compared to the old one.
I don't know about you guys but I always find myself fireballing everything in the game, even if the monster has like 2k or below hp especially on places with few group spawns. I want to use skills like icebolt to pick off weak mobs one by one, but due to how weak icebolt is I have to use an alternative like cc+4 firebolt/fusion casting/int magic. LF> better magic formula, and yes I know they're adding in magic protection and such but if we were to assume all mobs had 0% magic protection while everyone else suffered from normal protection I think this is a great buff to mages :D till then LF> better magic formula :c

Inb4 this "update" is just a part of a mega massive update the screws with the aspects of magic (not like it's not screwing with it now anyway) and we actually get what we want. I'm just really hoping that this is a phase of testing. Like really, really hoping.

Concentrated area gets bombarded with electricity. Enemies that survive are put under shock status, and electrify nearby enemies, which also gain the status. it has a 50% chance of interrupting their skills and attacks too.

And also, there's a report that mobs in test server had damage buff... nearly double their original damage. One person had a mana shield level 20 reforge, and was taking 30 damage from shadow wizard in hm, and yes, the person was a mage. Currently, if some mage had that reforge, they would only take 1~15 in lord missions, this is a disaster.

To summarize this page: Basically, with hits from the updated HM shadow warrior, with 19 def 2 prot base, trans(stage 1 falcon, lol), and shield, the person takes 80 bare damage, 40 with MS on, and 14 with MS 19 gloves. Full gear equipped.
Without shield and reforge, the person takes 119 damage, and with buffed def/prot (55/30~35), 116 w/o MS, 110 with MS, 51 with shield+MS+ping. Strangely enough, the horse's smash does around 177 with MS, 400 without.
Basically, shadow warrior that would have done 100 in current server does around 200 in test server (...)
It seems like people will still value MS. Yes, the efficiency is down by ALOT. But it still serves as your 2nd HP, if not your main. Since mobs' damage is increased, MS will still be used.
Additionally, for 120 def 20 prot giant, the character takes 80 damage from small sulfur spider from SS hm, 120 melee hit from FA hm wizards, 400 from archer mag. They're no crit.
Tip: Shields. Thanks to shield mastery, when you're smashed with a shield, the damage is nullified by 50%, although this isn't known if it's a bug or not.
Since new MS doesn't take character prot into account, you don't need to switch into heavy or light armors.
For armors, it hurts less w/o MS in general for normal hits, but for high damage (e.g: smash, fireball), MS is the way to go + shield.
Basically, the new def/prot favors beginners, but a blow for mid-end level.

I can only hope that things ultimately work out well for magic...otherwise I'll be quite disappointed - I'd like to return to my roots with magic and actually have it viable!
