Week of July 7th

I've been practicing. Slowly. Very slowly. I had to move, and had to do summer classes, and generally didn't have much time, but here are a few I did, I'll dig more out of storage tomorrow and upload them.

All I have for now are recent schoolwork drawings. I'll upload some I did on my own time once I get them out of storage.

I still have a lot of work to do, I know I messed up on a lot of things on it, but compared to my first attempts I feel like I have improved a lot. I am working on my final 3 assignments, and will post updates when I am finished.

First, though, a random drawing I did during class.
Not very realistic at all, and I know I messed up big time on the proportions, but I like how this looks for some reason.

This is me, doing my homework, which is to make a self-portrait. For the rest of this thread, pretend everything is mirrored, as I was looking into a mirror for all of this.

Now, the sun then set, leaving only a single lamp, which I had positioned shining directly to the left of my face, casting deep shadows.

What have I done. I would love to blame my glasses being missing and poor eyesight and the sun setting on this, but it really just looks like I'm bad at drawing.

Perhaps it's a homage to Two-Face.

Aside of that, practise makes perfect. I'm quite positive that even the likes of Otto etc. drew much worse in their respective beginnings.

I've gotten ok at drawing still life's actually. Things like flowers or houses. I just need to practice more, so I'm taking the extra credit homework. It's to do the same thing. But better.
I'll post any interesting ones I draw, attempt 2 was also pretty bad but I'm sure I'll get it next one!

People are hard to draw, I definitely agree. You have to capture the perception of a human towards another human being, and incorporate it into pencil and paper. What they believe from first glance is a human being. It's no easy feat.

Wrong, all it takes is good perception and physical/shape analysis (and learning to hold a pencil). Problem with beginners drawing, "they guess" whats in front of them. They end up drawing off their memory rather than investigating and analyzing the shape/size of the object and person. Which results in oddly shaped face? that looks nothing like the model, its as simple as putting two diamond on a upside-down pentagon and a line for the mouth.

I'm not concern about if your classmates doing better or not, nor if you're doing some extra credit work (cause it looks like you really need it). You're talking about a community college leveled Drawing 2 class, and I don't see how "practice" would even push you to such level. It's not all about practice, its habit and effort. You need to spend more time looking at yourself, analyze your face. Look at the distance between your forehead, eyes, nose, mouth chin.

I'm sorry if I sound like an jerk, but that's how I critique my peers. Especially the ones who get to an upper division life-drawing class without any basic understanding of drawing. Living off barely passing with a measly C, calling themselves illustrator major, its a damn shame.

Only exception, if your taking this class just to get elective credit (your not doing it to major art) or you have physical/mental problem that is affecting your control.

I'm not concern about if your classmates doing better or not, nor if you're doing some extra credit work (cause it looks like you really need it). I wasn't willing to submit that to my class. It was horrible. That drawing would get an F. My overall grade in the class is a c-, not that drawing. I have been doing more careful drawing observations since class yesterday when my teacher gave me some pointers.

I haven't yet had the time to draw another but tonight I will spend some time doing it. This teacher is really good, my drawing one teacher drove the point in to draw what I see not what I think I see and this teacher is showing us how. I just don't have the experience drawing in graphite to do value very well so it turned out horrible. I usually used charcoal because that was all my drawing 1 teacher let us use. My drawing 2 teacher had us switch to charcoal when doing value still life's a few weeks back and I decided I wanted to do graphite value for once.

Anyway I will amaze you all with my hard work next one!
It wasn't harsh, it was a good critique. I know for a fact I'm falling behind which is why I'm doubleing my effort and doing extra credit.

Be thankful for the people who get C's, that way you can have an A. If everyone changed their efforts and habits like you said, then everyone would have B's or C's despite their effort. If your prof is giving everyone an A, then s/he's doing something wrong unless of course, grades aren't curved in art school for some reason.

In the University I went to, only two professors curved. There is no standardized method of grading in college, it is all up to the professor. It is actually silly to give everyone B's if everyone got a perfect grade.

Results are what matters, not some micro-ranking system.

it's silly to give everyone B's if everyone gets a perfect 100, but at the same time, if everyone gets a perfect grade it means that something was wrong with their exam and it wasn't a fair exam, i.e. it was too easy

the fact of the matter is, not everyone does give their 100% and therefore a curve exists. let's assume though that everyone DID give their all in everything they did.. then the competition an A student would be facing would be much greater than the original case. i'm just saying that it's to your benefit that there are others who don't do as well/put in as much effort.
