Two explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon race have left an unknown number of people injured.
Video and photographs from Boston show a scene of confusion, with emergency services descending on the scene and bloodied spectators being taken to a medical tent.
"There are a lot of people down," said one runner quoted by AP news agency.
The incident reportedly came about three hours after the winners crossed the line.
"There was an explosion, police, fire and EMS are on the scene. We have no indication of how many people are injured," spokeswoman for the Boston Police Department said.
AP said there was a loud explosion on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the bridge that marks the finish line. Another loud explosion could be heard a few seconds later.
Mike Mitchell of Vancouver, Canada, a runner who had finished the race said he was looking back at the finish line and saw a "massive explosion."
Smoke rose 50ft (15m) in the air, he told Reuters news agency, and people began running away and screaming after hearing the noise.
"Everybody freaked out," he said.
Stragglers heading for the finish line were rerouted away from the smoking site of the blasts as the scene was locked down.
The Eastern Massachusetts branch of the Red Cross has set up a disaster response centre in the area.

most useful post 2013.
please pray, if you do that, or keep these people in your thoughts. we're watching this on the news right now and it's horrible. people are still on the ground, missing limbs and just not getting up. my dad was called in so if I hear anything i'll relay it here.

Please do Claudia. I'm still curious on how this happened, if it was an accident, or worse, planned by someone.
I hope nobody gets killed from this.

Fox News (credibility varies) says 3 people have died, 60 injured. On the news they've been saying that half a dozen people have been admitted to hospitals, but it has to be more than that. They put people in the medical tents they already had there.
You have been warned. Spoiler at your own risk.

I'm not going to bother finding video because they just keep playing it over and over again nonstop. People just fell to the ground and ran.
Edit: Boston PD just confirmed 2 dead, 19 injured. Whoever did this is cruel. #prayforboston.

Christ. I wonder what the heck is causing those explosions?
Hopefully not too many people end up dying from this. It's already fricking horrible.

Man, this really made me feel like shit today.
Luckily my friend who was in Copley Square is alright, I got really worried since she lives 3 minutes away and was going to watch the marathon in that area. Guess I'm lucky since I was about to watch the Marathon with her, but later declined .
And my shitheads roommates are taking this whole thing as a joke since they think it's funny.
Comments like "I know North Korea was behind this. I'm going to go to them and kill those chinks hahaha" since this was first announced in the news.
Hopefully they find the people responsible for this.

I hope they do.
This wasn't an accident. They're confirming on the news right now that they were homemade bombs.

There's also been a warning issued for people to stay away from public transit and the JFK library.
-
Claudia wrote on 2013-04-15 20:18
My dad said the JFK library was on fire for a bit, but it's out now and it was a mechanical fire. 2 dead, 23 injured, 28 in hospitals.
Thankfully my dad is staying behind in his town but he's out until midnight and the rest of his group is on Boylston now.

Apparently the 3rd one was just disarmed.
Edit: 2nd one as well, it seems. Thankfully.
