When has support bard ever been good? (As opposed to going battlefield then switching to main weapon). Or pure support support anything? Support classes have been dead since C3 at least, because you'd rather just have that player deal damage, unlike in traditional mmos where not having support classes means YOU DIE, full stop, with virtually zero room for compromise.
It just makes current strategies more convenient.
If you want to make support good, remove Mana Shield and all reforges from the game and halve the effect of stats on max damage, and halve current endgame HP. Or just lock skills by talent so we have a classed system again. Otherwise all strategies will fall short of "more and faster DPS." I'm not saying "do this" but to make support good, you have to make drastic changes to the game, far bigger than casting Battlefield without using a weapon slot on an instrument.
The only true reason support wasn't good... even back in g1...
Was the concept of wounds and high hitting monsters.
Back then in the early days, even a goblin could smite a total level 100 person to the ground and kick his corpse over and over... and let's forbid the metal skeletons or the golem boss at the room, so there wasn't any room to really heal people since 2-3 hit (and most hits were combos) pretty much guaranteed death.
Another reason is the concept of wounds. You can't heal wounds. So when fighting an archer enemy... even if you have time to heal because of the enemy's aim time... it meant nothing because if the person you are healing is wounded, well... tough luck.
And the 3rd... most final nail to the coffin why support/healing died as early as g1-g3...
There was no way to pull aggro off the healer. So pretty much if they weren't standing outside the dungeon door (which had limited reach if you cast party heal), you pretty much had a healer who had to fight as soon as a monster aggros them, which means they become a burden if they weren't good in combat... and if they were in combat, they better be a damage dealer.
It was tough to be a healer back then... I tried it. It wasn't good in g1, it won't be good now, especially with all the potions, nimbus pet, and etc. that can recover wounds and hp at the same time. Healing back then was a social skill. After the battle, you tell people to sit down and you mend them while holding fun conversations.
Healing is ultimately flawed for most situations. The only area where they shine is things like Secret Shadow Missions where not using pots is one of the main objectives or keeping a team of DKs alive.
