  Drawing realistic portraits takes time of practice, you have to start with basic shapes first, boxes, circles, cilinders, then draw spoons, cups, your mouse, bananas, apples, hats, your lamp , (and each of these about 200 times) and start doing more and more complicated shapes until you are drawing the human head, which is possibly one of the most complicated shapes of all.

  They laughed at my poor attempt to make an actual nose, everything else i could do perfectly fine. I just had a hard time doing the depth for the nose.

  Teacher asked to draw a picture of someone in the room.
  
  I took it to a literal sense and basically asked them to stay put while i sketched.
  
  Like honestly, i had no clue what to do because my only instructions were to "draw as you see the person"

  I dunno, I feel like I learned a lot from getting referance material from various piece of art and drawing from them.

  The word "copying" is tricky.
  
  You can learn A LOT from ANALYZING other artists.
  
  This Book for example, is simply amazing and there is so much to learn there.
  
  But it's about ANALYZING not COPYING (and that particular books helps on the analyzing part), if you just mindlessly copy or trace, you are learning nothing, the important part is to THINK what you are doing, and what is happening there.

  I still feel like what I'm doing is more similar to copying than analyzing through.. I take 3-5 referance pictures and try to draw certain elements from them and make one material out of it. Like I could take the "pose" of a piece, the clothing of another, the details of another and such.

  I feel guilt too, I dare not even show myself infront my favorite artist where I takem ost of my inspiration from. But what I gain from learningo ut of her art is just too much worth it.

  tracing: drawing over artwork to where you are just following the lines with the pen and then pretending that it's yours
  using other's work for practice can teach a lot and as long as you don't claim it's yours, there is nothing wrong with it

  Splat... If you're gonna start making an effort in learning to draw seriously, you need to do your practicing with a pencil, or a tablet. Not even a pen, because you're going to want to be able to erase your mistakes, especially as a beginner.
  The mouse won't allow you to reach your full potential. At all. No serious artists use a mouse to draw with. Mouses are for clicking things with, not for drawing things with.
  Just trust me on this, okay? :) Even if you don't like the scratching sounds pencils make on paper, you're gonna have to get used to it if you want to get anywhere.

  put some earphones on and listen to music while you draw so you don't have to listen to the pencil sounds

  See that is a lot better then nothing Splat. When I started drawing me and Alexa sometimes copied pictures to help like she said get in the feel of things and it really helped. But, you should really start drawing with a pencil and paper, wait until later to start on the computer.
