  You can't really avoid the popularity contest thing when it comes to events like this. The current method was just to make it less public to try and avoid the drama of last year. It seems to be working for the most part.
  
  I do like the suggestions being given though, if it is held externally again in the future I am sure the system will be revised to address some of the concerns people here have.

  1) Someone can vote multiple times, just at different intervals and mess up the results.
  
  2) Not an alternative vote. Someone could win with less than a third of the votes. How pitiful.

  Lets say 100 people in total vote
  97 of those people vote for different people
  3 people vote for the same person and that person wins
  97% of people aren't content with the results
  
  
  Don't get me wrong, the last system has this problem too, so does the USA government
  This system will probably yield more disappointed people
  Another alternative is to have alternative votes
  Pick three people to vote for and rank them from who'd you'd like to win the most to the least.
