  I was merely basing myself on other posts saying that the scythe's "magic smash" (after the normal smash) is where the damage dealing is at, and that it was for that reason that knocking back enemies with crits, throwing them out of the damage zone of that magic smash, was a bad idea.
  
  I am already aware that scythes do significantly more damage than staves, I was merely saying that, based on what others are saying, the normal scythe attacks are minor based on the magic smash's damage.

  In every boat except 4, I can no longer do smash attacks because my normals kill enemies by the second or third hit.

  Of course you can still smash. You just need to miss most (if not all) of the normal attacks. :glasses:

  No, because smash attacks lose a lot, whereas normal attacks dodge mitigation by using multiple attacks instead of just one.
  
  I also think defense has more of an effect on smash than normal.

  If defense shaves off 5 damage from each attack, then a smash that does 90 damage will do 85 while 4 normal attacks that do 10 will do 5 each. One attack will lose 5 damage while four attacks will lose 20 damage. And we're not even going into percents - high defense can lower normal attacks by up to 50% while only weakening smash attacks by maybe 20%. The loss is greater because normal attacks are multiple attacks instead of one strong attack.

  That only makes sense if defense shaves off a fixed amount from each attack. As I said, defense does different amounts for smash vs normal, so it works out that smashes take more of a burden from high defense.

  My Evie's weak for level 44, too. I don't even have over 1k int, and I'm using Dawn Rings. So what're your stats and what enemy is that on, then?
