I personally find image replying to be entertaining most of the time. I remember that on guru and here i cracked up heaps seeing image replies, to the point where my sister threw a hissy fit and told me to shut up. (OHH! Maybe that's why we should ban image replies!)
Anyway, i generally don't mind so long as the image is not indecent or offensive. And like others said, image replying is basically like emotes and: o-o, :3, =w=, T.T, ;~;, >:O and so on. They express in greater detail.

A simple emoticon is enough
