Nope, in .hack// Tsukasa was the only one who couldn't log off. Death by Tsukasa's guardian, getting data drained and a few other things I forgot about led to you being put into a coma and not permanent death because the creator didn't intend for any of that to happen. So nope, has somewhat similar premise but they are ultimately different.
I'll check it out later then.

Yeah it's not the anime's Fault though, episode two of the anime was based on Aira of the Starless Night. Its a side story that was written by the Author of the LN. In that story Kirito and Asuna both team up just like in ep2.
They was teaming up as part of the Clearing group, and not as a random party for other reasons however if you want to justify it somewhat that way.
inbetwen the side story and volume 8, which was released first?

Oops it was, Aria in the Starless Night, not of. And as for which came first not really sure, they was both out before I started reading either, although Aria takes place in the exact setting it did in the light novel at the end of the first floor. I'll try to find out what came out first but why are you asking exactly?

I kept reading and found out the autor said there was indeed inconsistencies inbetwen his short stories. A simple mistake on his end. *forgive the guy cause his work is still so great nevertheless*

The fight in episode two was pretty neat. The show remains enjoyable so far. I'm not sure if I want to get into reading until the anime is over, though.

Next ep will be the Black Cats SS, then Scilia SS and Murder in the Area SS after that. This won't really mean much unless you've read the novels though.
The anime seems to be moving at a very quick pace (lol @ rage in other forums), as the entire 2nd volume will be done in 4 eps (not completely confirmed but extremely likely).
I don't see how they will manage at this pace without adding filler/original anime-only content, which will most likely disappoint more fanboy novel readers lol
ALO perhaps?
They definitely will manage with sticking to novel content with their pacing.
Spoilers :
The Fairy Dance ark is likely to take place during the 2nd-cour of the show. ANN listed Suguha's voice actor as "Lyfa" during the time they first introduced which VAs would be partaking in the project. I don't see any reason why they would introduce her over other characters like Klein and Egil when her only line during the anime so far was one line in the first episode, as well has her relevance to the plot only coming in during Fairy Dance.
That being said, it makes sense that they seem to be rushing through all the early material of the SAO arc. I've predicted that they're going to be using 1 episode per side story in volume 2 and the rest for the events of volume 1 before they end the first-cour of the show. They could probably fit in the Murder Case arc too, or rather would, since members of the guild involved begin playing a larger role in the story if they get a second season in for the anime and go over the Phantom Bullet novels.
The only thing I don't like about what they did was how they skipped a ton of character development between Asuna and Kirito during Aria in the Starless Night.
Edit : Also, fun fact - The VA for Kirito's sister is the same VA for Kirino from My Little Sister can't be this Cute

Stop reminding me! I'm still grumpy about the female voice cast!
Reindeer's going to lose lot of impact being reduced to 1 ep, that one deserved at least 2!

yea.. I read the story episode 2 was based on, the "1 month after the begining". I find it sad they obmitted al ot of things, like Kirito rescuing Asuna from the dungeon, Suicidal Asuna, Asuna's bath scene. And the whole Rat character which was heavily present in the story yet not even mentionned once in the second episode.

I would have been able to understand them omitting Argo, though the fact that Diabel and Kibaou appeared in the episode makes it inexcusable for me. But what frustrated me the most about that episode was all the development between Kirito and Asuna.

By the way, I talked about it to someone and we both came to the conclusion that the autor of SAO is actually a Mabinogi player. Too many reference to mabinogi in SAO to ignore them..

Just got into this, read through all the currently translated light novels. I think part of the reason I'm totally into SAO is that I'm getting massive vibes of iRO from it. Spent way too many years playing that game...

The manga Yureka did that to be as well. Though, isn't Mabinogi actually popular in Japan/Korea, compared to the USA?

Third episode up now. A perfect example of how one stupid mistake can fuck your entire party over.
The thing that surprised me the most was Argo's brief appearance. I'm confused as to why they would show her in this episode and not the previous one, where she's the most involved as far as plot. Regardless, I they did a good job with this one in my opinion. There wasn't much to really cover in this side story compared to last episode.
Also lol'd at Klein's guild. I should have known his friends would match him in his samurai armor.
