Apparently, the National PTA and the National Education Association suggested that kids should be doing 10 minutes of hw per night per grade level. So that's 10 min for 1st graders, 110 minutes for 11th graders, and so on.

Then they're stupid. There's no way they would be able to implement something like that, and the time it takes for students to do homework varies.

Only a little under 2 hours for grade 11's? BS.

~2 hours for 11th graders isn't bad considering the amount of time you have to spend on projects, and essays. If it's total then yeah no problem, but per class would be ridiculous.

They should just make homework optional. Then, when the student fails the test because they don't know the material, the teacher should ask, "did you do your homework?"
Good way to prepare students for college, where homework is optional.

I'm not attending college yet, but but there are probably mandatory projects, essays, or lab work you'll have to do, depending on the class, as well tests. But they shouldn't be assigning "busywork" like in highschool.

I don't know, I'll probably get some hateful looks for saying this, but I kinda think they need more. This may just be me, but considering that I graduated from one of the most prestigious private schools in the US (St. Johnsbury Academy for anyone wondering), and I can do all of my homework in the 20 minutes from the time I got off the bus to the time that school starts, meaning no more opportunity to work on my homework, and have an average homework score of about 95% (a little less on English, a little more on my Japanese/Mandarin/science) kinda tells me that there's not enough homework for students to do. But like I said, that's just me and my experiences. Not every school/teacher is the same, so while I felt that I didn't get enough homework, some kids may feel they are too burdened with multiple assignments that each take up a good chunk of time. So eh, that's why I don't know.

Yeahh, there are people I know who spend up to 11 hours a night on homework, and it's ridiculous @__@ I don't even think they're procrastinating with facebook and whatnot. People I know have ditched school for a day just to try and finish their homework ;_; I personally don't have too much homework though.

Schools are different. I'm not sure how your private school works, but they're obviously preparing you for success. For some redneck schools in Mississippi, some teachers might arbitrarily give students grades. It depends on how tightly the school regulates what their teachers are allowed to do, and more on the individual teachers themselves. A lazy teacher might not give much homework (cuzz she doesn't want to grade it), or a teacher who doesn't care at all might not give any.

Psh, that time usually varies a lot. I don't think that's long enough, if most people don't take school seriously and procrastinate. Some people just don't want to use their time wanting to learn something, because they aren't really that interested in it at all. D:
Most of my homework has been optional, but the only thing I do it for is practice on anything I don't understand. I don't mind taking the time myself to understand something properly, and why it is the way it is. And if I do understand it completely, I don't need to spend too much extra time reviewing the material in class.
The only time I would spend basically my whole after school from coming home to the moment I sleep is probably when I actually have to do major projects that are worth a lot. I believe that if I'm going to put that much into something, then why not put some interest to it and work hard on it? That way, it's pretty much getting more out of it.
