Trust me. If it were optional in high school, NO ONE is gonna do it.
Just saw this.

Any student that gives half a care about school WILL do their homework so they understand what they're learning, as well as maintaining a good grade. I wouldn't even THINK about not doing my homework if it was optional, because (most) teachers don't give practice work for the sake of making you work your butt off. At the very least, even busywork helps to drill basic skills in your head.

Yeah i say that if a student person needs to do homework or is doing bad in the class and actually cares about his grade. He would do homework to practice up.
I for one didnt need homework in middle school .-. it was just annoying being forced by teachers to constantly do it

Personally, I think some people need MORE, not LESS. Some of the things they do just so they won't hurt people's feelings is already ridiculous. If kids are having trouble with their homework, then have someone help them. If the trouble's so significant that the bit of help doesn't, well...help, then they should be changed to a different class.
There's another problem, though. I do think that SOME things are a huge waste of time. I'm still waiting for the day where I have to freaking apply pre-calculus to ANYTHING I do in life. That stuff's so useless to me I've forgotten most of it, and I always got A's and B's in math. Mostly A's. Looking back, I could have used that time doing homework on a subject that DID interest me. Sure, the basics should be taught to a certain extent, and a person should be well-rounded enough, but some people just aren't going to keep using a lot of these things later on.

Not even people who are doing poorly need/should do homework - i'm a (now) straight-A honors student.
How did I get the A? By doing my homework. Not only is it a easy 15% of my grade, homework is most helpful to me when i'm not entirely sure of a concept. Sometimes I completely nail stuff and the homework is a breeze, but even then, the extra practice is always helpful. Practice makes better.
Homework is practice.

Idk, I guess it was just me. I found High School to be really repetitive, simple, and annoying. I aced all my test but lost about 10% of my grades (depending on the teachers) Just because i refused to do homework.
I would come home forget about homework and go relax and do something not school related.
Homework is practice yes, that's why I take it seriously in college.
Edit: Was #12 in my graduating class would have been higher if I did homework :o
But regardless i got into the college i wanted to get into.

I took 3 AP courses and a foreign language last semester and spent 10 minutes a day on average on homework (and got all As). I'm currently taking 3 AP classes and a foreign language this semester, but now I has to spend like 2 hours a day on homework >.< It depends a LOT on classes.

Ya, that kind of thing is only really useful for anyone persuing a career in science. I personally think there should be a more flexible approach to education since the current one is too restrictive for smarter students who want to excel quickly and for slow students that generally have a hard time studying. However, I do also think they waste far too much time and effort re-teaching certain classes. I still can't understand why it takes 14 year to "master" ENGLISH.

Thats a waste of paper for the kids because never do it and my schools in my district are cheap on ink. They should increase everything else like reviews in class.

I mean, yeah, high school isn't the most complicated thing ever, but if you do all your work and understand what's going on, it *is* pretty simple.
And it definitely depends on classes, and even the teacher you end up with. I had a terrible geometry teacher who assigned ridiculous amounts of busywork (and laughed when people failed tests but that's another story) and I ended up switching classes to another teacher. Same level class, but a more reasonable homework load. I probably would've learned more in the first class, but it was miserable.
I dunno, i'm of the mentality that I should put my best effort into EVERYTHING I do, even if it's a short worksheet for my stupidly easy honors history class.

It's all about being able to understand every single little thing that can possibly be implied by the writing, everything the writer wants to tell you with his work, and what the writer was thinking at the time <.<

I agree with the reviews. Far too often am I given homework and then it is not reviewed in class, I merely get graded on it(and this only sometimes, when the teacher feels like collecting the homework). It's gotten to the point I know myself am failing pretty bad on homeworks, all I feel like now is just acing the tests and forgetting the homework.

They focus too much on memorization, and not application. I get that having names for things is important so that you can explain certain other things, but beyond a certain point, only people that are actually interested in the field should have to learn more of the specifics. My grammar isn't great. Hell, my English isn't great. Even so, I can communicate well enough without remembering almost any grammar terms.
