the insult here is that the guy told the waiter to get a "real job"
well he didn't appreciate that someone serving his food is a job
and restaurants have waiters to serve customers better

Some waitress/waiters in some restaurants are pretty bad. I wish I can write some like that in some of those restaurants I been to. I don't know how some of those waitress/waiters can be hired, and still keep a job.
I guess those waiter/waitresses never heard of the 1 penny tip.

Chances were the waiter was pretty decent, but refused to acknowledged how rich the banker was. So she got that lame tip and the rude comment on the receipt.

You don't have to tip. That's why it's called a fucking tip. These people get their panties in too much of a bunch over their tips. The problem is their employers not paying them enough so that they need the tips to even make minimum wage, but that's another problem...
I mean, someone else had to work for their money that they're paying to have their meal. You're getting paid to do your job of serving them the meal. A tip is supposed to be if they enjoyed your service to them. If they didn't, why the fuck should you get a tip?
Greedy ass spoiled people nowadays, I tell ya...

He didn't have to put that on the receipt though, that's just asking for trouble.

Basically, the waiter didn't perform the level of service expected from the customer, and received the tip the waiter deserved?

It also to show how bad the waiter as well. Not saying that the customer wasn't bad either.

Tipping is a common courtesy. You tip low/not at all for bad service, but if service was reasonably good, you're expected (but not obligated) to be fair. I don't like tipping because I'm pretty much always strapped for cash, but if the service I got was good, I try to be fair and tip 20-25%. Obviously, you don't tip your cashier at a fast food place or anything... But you should try to tip at any restaurant where your food is brought out to you, and at the bar.
We don't know if the specific waiter in this story provided bad service, but the commentary given by the fellow-banker indicates that this customer was proud of his rudeness.

I know waitresses that bitch about tips. They expect ## amount on a ### check, even if its off by $1 or 2 they have the nerve to call them "awful tippers". Even if the customers are teens that lack the money, they talk horrible about them.

Well, if you look at the story (at least, the version I read @ HuffPost), this guy is openly high-and-mighty about his place in the "1%" and has nothing but nasty things to say about everyone else.
Personally I think it's rude, regardless of the situation.
And you ARE expected to tip appropriately when you go out to eat somewhere. I have NEVER encountered a situation where a person/myself/my family did not tip. I think it's the least you can do, really.

You don't have to tip. It's "usually" not mandatory.
You should tip (in the United States) if you received good service. It's a simple act of respect that's reinforced by our culture.
You should act like a professional, especially when your actions could potentially spark a media outrage.
You shouldn't act like a dick if you don't want people spitting in your food.
It sounds like this guy needs to get his ass beat.

While tips aren't mandatory, insulting your waitress and making a mockery of the practice is a move in poor taste.

I mean, I kinda wonder what this guy thinks would happen if waitresses had "real jobs."
Like, holy shit, he might have to serve his own meal!
