ROYAL ALCHEMIST [Image: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v146/Groudon/alchemist.png]
Mabinogi brings an enormous amount of content with Generation 11. The city of Tara expands into the kingdom's castle, the Rath Royal Castle, and with it arrive many Shadow Missions and also many new features.
One of these is the widely known features is the option to become a Royal Alchemist.
"What the heck is a Royal Alchemist?"
Just like a Seal Breaker, a Royal Alchemist is a special title that can be held by someone. However, it isn't just a title; it is also very much like a job. Therefore, the position isn't permanent and can be lost if you do not meet a set of requirements each week.
There can only be 100 Royal Alchemists per server at one time. To become one, you must apply for the position.
"Sounds interesting! How do I apply?"
To become a Royal Alchemist, you must obtain a minimum rank of at least Rank B Alchemy Mastery. If you haven't yet, here's a great guide on how to train the skill.
After meeting this single requirement, you can apply for the position by talking to Sinead, located in the Reception Room on the 2nd floor of the Rath Royal Castle.

"What's the process of selection like?"
Royal Alchemists are chosen every Saturday at exactly 12:00 am PST. The system decides the top 100 applicants (both current and new) who will become or remain the Royal Alchemists for that week.
The process of selection is based off your Alchemy skill ranks and your Journal achievements (explained below). The higher skill ranks and more achievements you have, the more favorable you are to being selected for a Royal Alchemist position.
If you are selected, you will be notified by mail. If it's your first time, you must then go back and talk to Sinead, the NPC you applied with, to receive your position, along with some prizes.
"Wait, did you say prizes??"
The first time you become a Royal Alchemist, you will receive a title and enchanted equipment that can only be worn by you (or another Royal Alchemist).
[the Royal Alchemist]
- Crystal Making Success +1%
- Synthesis Success +1%
- Fragmentation Success +1%
- Water-Type Alchemy +15 Dmg
- Fire-Type Alchemy +5 Dmg
Royal Alchemist's Suit
Prefix: Soggy (Water-Type Alchemy +27 Dmg)
Suffix: Academic (Crystal Making Success +3%, Synthesis Success +3%)
Royal Alchemist's Boots
Prefix: Baking (Fire-Type Alchemy +5 Dmg)
Suffix: Flooded (Water-Type Alchemy +12 Dmg)
The second (or following) times that you get selected to become a Royal Alchemist, you will not be rewarded these equipment. So if you lose them, you will have to purchase them yourself. They're quite expensive too: 200k gold for the suit, 100k gold for the shoes-- so take care of them.
The uniform may not be mailed, traded, or placed in pet inventories, but it can be stored in the bank (or destroyed if you wish). Additionally, the uniform cannot be dyed and the enchants on it cannot be burned off.
"What other advantages are there to being a Royal Alchemist?
(1) While equipped with a Cylinder, you will have a special pose while standing.

(Note: Elves have the same stance poses as Humans.)
(2) A Royal Alchemist will also be able to discover Cylinder upgrades and have his or her name imprinted on the upgrade itself, similar to breaking a Seal Stone. (Not as applicable anymore, as most upgrades have already been discovered.)
For example, I could discover an upgrade for a Wind Cylinder. The upgrade would therefore be named, Phunkie's Freezing Enhancement 1, and it would add +1 second of freezing time to the Frozen Blast skill (while equipped with a Wind Cylinder, that is).
Although only Royal Alchemists can discover upgrades, discovering them is quite random. Someone could be using Barrier Spikes with an Earth Cylinder and discover an upgrade for the Water Cylinder. Mabinogi works in funny ways like that.
The name of the upgrade is permanent and goes to the person who discovers it.

(3) And most importantly, you get to help others with their solo mainstream quests-- for example, like the G10 and G11 final missions. Same experience and gold rewards! All just for being a good Samaritan.

"You said the position isn't permanent though. How do I remain a Royal Alchemist?"
I mentioned that each week, a Royal Alchemist must meet a set of requirements in order to keep the position. These requirements as known as Activity Points.
There are many ways for obtaining Activity Points. Here's a couple of ways.
+1 pt for every hour that you are logged in.
- Limited to 24 points per day.
+1 pt for every Shadow Mission (or Cooking Dungeon) completion.
- Limited to 10 points per day this way, with no difficulty restriction.
+5 pts for every mainstream Shadow Mission (from G9~G12) that you help complete.
- Limited to 10 points per day this way, with no difficulty restriction.
- After attaining the maximum 10 points, every mainstream Shadow Mission then counts for a regular mission (+1 pt).
+6~9 pts for every Royal Alchemist mission completion. (These are given to you by Sinead.)
- Limited to one mission per day.
Be careful though. You can also lose Activity Points!
After 48 hours without login, you will lose 1 point for every 2 hours.
- Limited to 12 pts lost per day.
You must net a minimum of 60 Activity Points before the next Saturday or you will lose the Royal Alchemist position.
Finally, even if you do obtain the 60 minimum points, you can still lose the position if you no longer fall in the Top 100 applicants.
"Competition, much?"
Yes, becoming a Royal Alchemist is definitely much like a competition. However, I think it's a great addition to Mabinogi.
It definitely encourages people to be friendly and help others in their missions and quests. G11's final mission, for example. Who wouldn't love to have someone next to you fighting those four dragon snakes with ya?
Also, 100 people per server get chosen for this position, unlike just one Seal Breaker. And the selection switches every week, so you'll always be seeing different Royal Alchemist instead of the same old ones.
You even get a chance to discover an upgrade yourself and have it be named after you!
It's a fun, new feature and I definitely recommend you try it when it comes out.
