So what will be the usefulness of light armor? Because all I'm seeing now is a ton of people going to wear heavy armor. While I want to be a gunner that prob wouldn't work. Any thoughts?

Okay, Just did some tests and here is some of the raw data.
379 HP -> 691 crits : Formula states I should be doing 514
669 HP -> 920 crits : Formula states I should be doing 514
No enchants, regular cylinder r1 flame rB AM and r8 Flame Alchemy
Is that per hit of flame burst? Or cumulative?

It depends, you lose a lot of dex from heavy armor and with the new balance system you will most likely be struggling to achieve 80% balance. If you have the dex and enchants I don't see why a gunner wouldn't wear heavy armor it would be very beneficial and you are not depending n dexterity for damage. Light armor still has it's place now having a bunch of max damage with Ancient Darkness and giving a nice bit of defense thanks to the mastery. Clothing can also be enchanted for crit now and will not reign supreme in all aspect. Tailor your armor to fit your playstyle.

That's per hit with flame burst at 5 charges not cumulative.

Exactly, light armor is still the top pick for archers (barring Bohemian), puppeteers, and (human/elf) fighters.
So essentially light armor would be ideal for hybrid players that utilize any of the above or those who aren't able to cap their balance.

I'm assuming that's on 0/0 mobs. If so... Wow I wonder how much damage it can do fully geared...

Currently on NA, I can deal 2800 crits with an S type Volcano. My non crits are above 1k. If I can get a working formula together which is the goal of my new thread hopefully we can extrapolate this data.

Light armor: everyone except mages/alchemists that give two shits about dex
Heavy armor: mages/alchemists (lel i can sit there in my suit of armor and spam my big spells with zero penalty and no stun unlike literally every RPG made because only Devkitty would forget one of the BASIC rpg balance conventions)
Still need to find out more about chaincasting.
Update really helps Flame Burst and hurts WC. Flame Burst with duration reforges will actually be able to chain full charge Flame Bursts and doesn't have that awful MP dependence.

Sadly this is probably right and nobody will use heavy armor now besides those two classes.

I was hoping to avoid wearing heavy armor as a gunner as it just seems unreal. But since I'm a str and int hybrid I see that ill be wearing it for combat I suppose. Thanks.

Well Dex still affects balance and defense piercing for gunner.
So maybe not...

No, just STR and INT, you're probably thinking of puppets.
