Once my main character is lvl2k, I plan on making an elite vate character. However, since I do a lot of commerce and have a commerce speed outfit higher lvl than an alpaca robe, I don't really want to make a giant. I also prefer elves to humans because of things like hide and the running speed... I would probably rank melee to use along with alchemy as my main talent. I guess my question is then:
Can alchemy stand on its own or be adequately supplemented by elf melee?

I wouldn't recommend elf melee, if your gonna do melee, make a human.
As an elf you're better off ranking Archery, Fighter, Puppetry or Gunslinger alongside alchemy with the vate card.

Whatever happened to skill ranking priority, or using guard cylinders alone?
-

The answer to that is save up 3k ap and then don't think about skill priority anymore.
Guard cylinders alone is basically an extension or replacement to magic bolts.

Skill ranking priorities are in another side-guide I made.
Using guard cylinders alone? not really viable unless your a giant or a mage.

I've found that charge and low rank sand burst and wind blast (latter mostly as an intro to assault slash or crash shot placement) are nice utilities for my elf along with a sword as I finish range and wait to get into melee. Obviously not intended for damage, just useful placeholders.

I'm partial to having shock and raincast. Aggro and crowd control. But as a beginner I'd suggest you shock something else other than yourself, since you do get aggro from mobs (a pet is good).

If you shock a summoned golem, the mobs will aggro that.

Damn I thought I was doing most of this right by myself >.< I'm missing a few of your recommended skills ;~: I'll work on bard as soon as i cap my magic D:
Thank you so much for the guide though I was having the hardest time deciding what enchants and reforges I would need. Also I was going to ask you what do you think about the new divine cylinder? would it be actually useful? I'm asking cause I have rank1 magic craft and I'm wondering if I should bother to craft it.

The divine cylinder has a elemental modifier of 0%(Water, fire, wind, clay), and it gets upgrades for all elemental damage.
Is it useful? I don't think so.

lots o questions
-is there a point of getting higher than 80% crit as a flame alchemist? I want to crit more but i people tell me "critical is capped at 80%"
-should i buy an earthquake cylinder? 18% doesn't seem like much and I see people just switching into tower cylinders after placing hydra.
also, as a wise battle alchemist, which of the following skills should be ranked first to reach master title?
Wind blast
Wind alchemy
Sand burst
Shock (r9 atm, having some issues where cp requirements are fulfilled) :(
frozen blast
(elemental wave r9 /golden time rF) not sure if they give exp because wiki talent page doesn't say.

Since flame ignores protection for crit calculations, I'd say it's not needed, But I recommend getting higher crit later on for Heatbuster/WC.

If your planning on switching to another cylinder after you place it, no.
Hydra's damage will based off your currently held cylinder.

I have no idea on talent EXP, sorry.

Gonna chime in here. While frozen blast and shock have extremely high ap costs, they also give a ton of exp to battle alchemy talent ranking. Ranking just one of those to r1 should be plenty to net you the master talent title. Which one you want to rank however is up to you. I personally like the mana that shock gives because mana is extremely versatile and I have plenty of stamina anyways but thats just me.

ahh i see.. thanks for the helpful advice but im gonna go with frozen blast since shock isn't getting it's requirement fulfilled for me when it comes to cp related things.
can i get some info on how the frozen success rate works? i know lullaby does not depend on cp and even works when monster is in midair/moving but what about frozen blast?
