Quote from Froglord of DESTINY!!!;1130666:
No one likes SAO because it was a .hack ripoff that catered to the mildly emo angst age group.
Actually if you want to play chicken and the egg. Both stories were written around the same time and highly unlikely that either ripped each other off.
SAO story was originally intended to be a submission into a contest for 2002, but the author decided against it because it exceeded the contest's length requirement.
SAO was instead introduced as a web novel in early 2002 and .hack anime primer was also in 2002.
Of course .hack being an anime got more coverage than a web novel (especially with the anime craze a decade ago in my area: Canada).
The author wasn't recognize until 2008 when he/she wrote Accel World and won a contest with it. Finally the author is hot shit that greatly impressed ASCII Media Works the contest holders.
ASCII Media Works was so impressed they requested the author to have his earlier work SAO published. The author agreed and now the SAO web novel is taken down and republish as a paper back novel in 2012.
Apparently some chapters from the web novel are missing because they're "too raunchy" for the public. We lost explicit sexy time in the first volume :U (... I found the English translation... and LOL)

By the way both stories are interesting in their own way.
For me...
.hack//sign is emo escape reality and get stuck in game, but learn that there are people out there that care.
SAO is more of a romance ish thing... I can't say much about it, I only watched up until SAO arc and read a bit of the translated light novel. The tentacles and unconscious molesting in the hospital... What's with this author and self sacrificial heroines that renders them unconscious and in hospital beds (read/watch both Accel World and SAO if you don't get what I mean)?
