Outside elemental reforges and such, yes it can rival the damage.
They're quite similar in terms of damage when used against elemental immune enemies.

Kenero, I'm sure that this question has been answered somewhere but I haven't been able to find it from searching, and thought that it would be appropriate to ask this question here: What non-gunner skills can be used with guns and how are they changed (if any)? This may or may not be something that you'd want to include with your guide, but I'd like to know just to satisfy my own curiosity; other than that, I'd probably figure out on my own when they come out.

Well, I won't count things that help indirectly (Str, HP, Stamina, Mana, Will, etc. from skills), but only combat skills that can be used with guns. Yes, I know Magic Mastery gives MP indirectly helps gunner, but let's go to the skills:
You can use:
- Defense
- Counterattack
- Windmill
- Evasion
- Assault Slash
- Berserker
- Shadow Bushin
- Spider Shot
- Magic Shields
- All Bolt Spells (including healing, but does not include fusion bolt)
What it does not include (though a lot of skills is obvious, like you can't use charging strike with guns, but here are some common ones people ask):
You cannot use:
- Smash
- Charge (even shield-less Charge)
- All Alchemy Skills
- Any Ranged-based Attack (Spider Shot is the only one that works)

Also, Counterattack is changed in that, it works the same but uses up two bullets per use. That being said, if you attempt to use Counterattack without any bullets, rather than attempting to reload like with gun skills, you will instead deal barehanded counterattack damage, rather than the damage of gun+bullets. As far as I know, no other skills were changed that are still usable.

I had a feeling shieldless charge wouldn't work with guns since it doesn't with ranged. I still had a flicker of hope though. It has been extinguished!

No, though strangely, you can use closer on barriers. Though normal attack does go through barriers, just not any skills.
You can also use closer in provocation on the enemies on the OTHER side of the barriers, however you merely damage and stun them, you actually do not get inside.

Stack Luck and Hope they miss. Oh wait the Luck changes wont come out for a long time so you are prob screwed. But charging strike is your best bet for closing gaps.

Same methods as pvp versus archers then I guess. Evasion should work on gunner skills consider it's still ranged
