I'm going to be trying melee, magic is starting to feel too slow.
Any general tips on how to be a good swordie? I'm thinking of going 238 Mace+Shield, because I really love Assault. ...And because I'm at the point where Refining is impossible to max without spending an asston on skill reset capsules.
Other than Defense D, Windmill 9, and Critical 7, all my combat skills are F. Where should I go from here?
I'm thinking of dabbing into Mana Shield, too. I can easily break 350 INT, and have quite a mana pool to work with.

WM 1. All I can say.

WM and smash are you best buddies :D if you have enough dex, you can use warhammers too, which are arguably the best 1h weapons if upgraded correctly. Max out crit too, since it'll help all your fighting styles.

I think you should still finish refine ._.
You're just going to get more dex from here on out and you're going to need the balance sooner or later.
A title+scarecrow set+other enchants and vales fire should put you in a decent spot.
Since your total is 800, I doubt you're at the point where refine is truly impossible.
I was at level 850 or so before I even started refine.
That's with the naturally high dex of elves and high range ranks + other life skills.

Rank 5 WM. Now. You might have trouble getting to rank 1 due to your magic profession(Magic is a CP dispenser) but rank 5 will suffice. Rank 1 is recommended though. Use Difficult Armor and other cheap -100 CP enchants to help. Raising Critical along with WM is a good option, since WM will benefit from all the juicy extra damage.

WM to r1. Critical whenever possible. Do some smash. Combat Mastery rB is a good place to pause to not get massive CP until you've finished training what you need and so you can use Raven enchants without the penalty.

Rank your windmill, the blood sweat and tears for it will be very worthwhile. Up defensive since if your dabbling and not going full out worry more about using your melee to compliment magic to make it more exciting for you. Counter is a battle mage's best friend along with windmill and charge. Smash is great to rank as well for more combo choices. Rank critical regardless of your style since it's a passive skill that helps EVERYONE. So i would say rank your windmill and critical then go into counter and defense. Rank smash after the fact and rank charge pretty much whenever, it's a nice mini strength adder and a fun skill. Unless you plan to go full out don't worry about ranking CM as it'll do little more than give you a headache in terms of CP and HP pot as mages have to deal with MP pot as it is. Keep in mind a lot of melee skills will need a fair chunk of AP and will eat a decent chunk of CP so be weary that you wish to move, it will take some time to make the skills truly compliment your magic.
That's just me though.

step one: Work Windmill to r1. While you are doing that, use the gold left over after repairs to buy ore to rank your refine to r1.
step two: worry about step one first.

Work WM to Rank 1 with ranking Refine at the same time. After you get those two out of the way, I would work on Critical Hit and Combat mastery. Maybe through in a little Smash.
Really you can take it how you want after you get Rank 1 WM and Rank 1 Refine. ;)

Or you could rank metallurgy.
I did refine easily with metallurgy... buying ore is just too expensive when I'd rather have outfits and dyes ._.
Until I got to silver ores, that's a pain.
