You're going to have to do refine sooner or later. It's less painful now than it would be later.

I know a R4 Tailor who didn't do refine, with R1 Weave, R1 Prod, and max archery :p She got through it eventually ;D
Christ that must've taken forever...
I guess I'll get to it eventually. I do kick it at the beach every so often.

Wasn't too long :3 The worst thing was that she had 99% on Mithril at R3, so only the last few ranks took a while D;

Work WM to Rank 1 with ranking Refine at the same time. After you get those two out of the way, I would work on Critical Hit and Combat mastery. Maybe through in a little Smash.
Really you can take it how you want after you get Rank 1 WM and Rank 1 Refine. ;)
Work on Critical Hit simultaneously with other skills, and rank it whenever you can. It's much easier to do it this way than consciously train it (which is a pain in the ass IMO :v).

Yeah, I was going to say it rank it with everything else but then they would've been ranking like 4 skills at once 8v

Or you could rank metallurgy.
I did refine easily with metallurgy... buying ore is just too expensive when I'd rather have outfits and dyes ._.
Until I got to silver ores, that's a pain.
May as well toss in ranking metal conversion to r1 to take care of that issue with the silver. But seriously, metallurgy isn't required and would be a matter of preference. The ore costs up to the point metallurgy becomes a pain, simply aren't high enough to warrant the time spent on the beach when time training WM could also be used to "gather" ore for refine. But, that's just the way I'd do it.

How does WM = ores?

It would be good to rank Metallurgy alongside Refine for the Dex and Stam, because who wants to gather ores after they're done with Refine and are looking for more sources of Dex? Metal Conversion to r1 at the same time might be a good idea as well, since you can be done with ores and move onto something else.

Windmill, Refine and Animal Taming are more difficult to rank as your character progresses. When someone asks for build assistance, most players spout out "windmill/refine" for a good reason. This is one way to look at it. Windmill gives Archers will. Refine gives Knights cheap balance.

I wish it was cheap balance. Getting from rF to r2 took 2m worth of ores, and r2 to r1 took 1m by itself. :fail:

Compare to any other life skill.

He's saying that the time you spend training WM could instead be spent gathering ores.

Weaving is a lot cheaper and gives more DEX, too. Although it takes a while to train, you are basically gathering materials on your own and not needing to buy much or anything at all.
Of course, what I've just said is what I've gathered from reading through threads here and on Guru, and I have no experience training the skill. But it really doesn't matter because refining should always be done before weaving.

Weaving is painful, especially fabric ._.
Refine is easy if you have the ore.
