I'm interested in how you guys would compare Mabinogi to other games like WoW or FF14 just to see how good of a game Mabi really is considering having fun. Personally tho:
1) Storyline is not that great nor bad. The generations are usually busywork, where you talk to different NPCs mostly and do some dungeons. The NPCs don't talk and you just read the boring dialogs. Iria and Iria 2 were fun imo, alot of minigames, compared to the generations i actually got interested in the plot.
2) Gameplay - i love the combat system. The graphics are nice, animations smooth. It sucks that i can't jump tho and that's why i can't blend into the world as much as i want to. I know it's useless but jumping would be epic in Mabi. The homestead system doesn't really intrigue me, mostly because i can't enter my house and hanging around a pond and some trees gets boring over time. Guild system is nice but i wish there was an option for warping to guild instead of using the guildstone. If some shadow missions had more environment in them like the Fiodh dungeon does, it would make it more appealing. Lacking in audio.
I haven't played that many MMORPGS but compared to LOTRO, which focuses alot on the storyline, you don't need to pay to keep playing the game (you need to buy areas). I rely way more on my personal skills than i did in LOTRO, where i just spammed the same buttons over and over.
I like it that items aren't level-dependent in Mabi as they are in LOTRO, because i got more weapons to choose from and each of them have different characteristics. The ap system is awesome and you're not restricted to one class. Then again, the class-restriction made raids more fun in LOTRO, because you needed healers, tanks and damage dealers to succeed and each of us felt useful with a purpose not in like Mabi, where everyone just does their things, some superior to others.
Mabi rewards exploring more than LOTRO but has a smaller world, at the same time this mechanic kept players interested in LOTRO, because you hadn't seen everything in LOTRO and you wanted to.
Overall, raids are more fun in LOTRO, while solo combat is more fun in Mabi. Storyline is ofc better in LOTRO, where you can even do quests together in a party and doing things together even if boring, was what made it enjoyable while experiencing the environment. Solo questing is boring in both games. Both games become pretty much advanced messengers at lategame, because there isn't much to do but Mabinogi has way more events.
Imo jumping, guildwarp, new shadow missions with more effort put into the environment would be game-changing.

Typical Pay2win game. Customization is overall superior to most other games. Combat is unbalanced but enjoyable in some aspects. If I had to compare it to something, I'd say it feels like Facebook with minigames at times.

Combat system?
Great. Certain factors really dumb down the challenge and make harder content worthless as a means to guard better rewards.
Character progression?
Great. It takes a lot of time and effort to max everything out. Pretty great skill list with some bad eggs and some poor mechanics.
Guild support?
Abysmal. They haven't touched guilds in a long time and they provide roughly zero benefits.
Story?
Poor. A patchwork of different stories with no clear vision. Characters are usually forgotten. No continuity.
Content?
Poor. Minimal content, most of which is repetitive, unrewarding, or inaccessible.
PVE systems:
Bad. There are a handful of them but they all suffer from having awful rewards and none really encourage parties
PVP systems:
Abysmal. We've got dueling (without stakes/clauses), the arenas (outdated trash), pet battles (has stakes, lol). No minigames.
Non-combat features:
Good/Great. Visual customization is top-notch. Life skills are usually unrewarding but most are at least well developed.
---
The only other MMO that I've played was Runescape. Compared to it, Mabinogi has better combat. Everything else is much worse. Thankfully, the game is much better than it once was but the entire thing is just...hollow.

I think the strengths of this game are it's lore and focus on dress-up. I do think that whatever this game has to offer though; is trumped by the game's engine that just can't keep up with current MMOs.

i'm a little confused as to how you can have a good combat system but both bad PVE and PVP

Fanatic base combat, a lot of room for improvement. But plagued with horrible balancing. As seen already, balancing make or break PvP and PvE .

Pretty much every other game has content largely expanded and/or evolved. Mabinogi has basically stood still.

The combat is great. The PVP/PVE systems are bad (i.e. dueling, Elf vs Giant, Pally vs Dark Knight, arenas, dungeons, TMs, falias, renes, etc).
Dark Souls has been heralded for many reasons, to include its amazing combat system. Let's take a look at what would happen if we Mabinogi'd it:
- Remove all areas beyond the undead burg or leave them empty
- Start out at the Firelink Shrine
- Everything is strong as fuck
- Fight your way to undead burg; level up
- Rebirth back to Firelink Shrine
- Event going on - 90% of the population is here
- Pick up Chaos +5 Zweihander (Rainbow Beam Swords) from event drop
- Giant Dad
- Fight your way to Taurus Demon 50 times because 'fuck else is there to do?
- Taurus Demon drops nothing of value after all that
- Head back to Firelink Shrine
- Event still going on
- Event gives you some more awesome free shit

except isn't PVP & PVE the entirety of combat? like, what else would you use combat for aside from pvp/pve.. I honestly can't think of a single thing

I'm talking about the combat mechanics.
You're not catching on. I'm not sure how else I can explain it to you...
Call of Duty having great gameplay VS matchmaking taking 20 minutes to start a game.

I will copypasta Kaeporo's criterion:
Storyline - Good but lots of plot holes. How did black & macho Dark Lord turned into a skinny, White man in g17? Pretty good story for F2P but not compared to Steam games
Combat - Absolutely amazing. I love rock-paper-scissors idea, too bad people only rely on AoE skills to efficiently kill mobs
Character Progression - Pros and cons. A lot of people wouldn't enjoy playing Mabinogi because character progression takes too long compared to other games. Skill trainings are time-consuming too. Good side is that you don't really need to make multiple characters for different classes.
Content - Lots of stuff to do. Raids, combat, lifeskill, socializing (the most evident one). I think there are plenty of contents in Mabi, just not enough incentives.
PvP - Love it. Pretty much the only time where you can utilize rock-paper-scissors. Too bad most duels/EvG are very gear/stat dependent.
PvE - Boring. I've spammed NPC and other raids everyday for my 100+ rebirths. It's repetitive and there is no excitement leveling your character unlike other games.
Guild Support - A bit behind compared to other Nexon games. Wish we had a guild storage or more efficient ways to communicate with guild members.
Non-Combat - Isn't this what Mabi is all about? Campfire, bard, socializing, idk. Vindictus has literally nothing to do except combat contents. Sitting on a campfire 24/7

I'll make a full comprehensive post later but...
The content of Mabinogi has gotten a bit weak.
But the combat mechanics, skill ideas, how we fight, interact, is wonderful.
One BIG merit I will give Mabinogi is the rebirth system. Unlike other MMOs where I can reach in-game level pretty fast (flyff, onigiri, tera, etc.) Mabinogi's growth is always there.
And with weekly rebirths, there will be progress for many years until you cap everything. Because we rebirth back to level 1, there is fresh action every week, unlike things in flyff, where once you reach lv.150, you feel the slow down and just farm kalgas, ankou all the time with no variations.

Basically what saves Mabi PVE is that the system itself is fun, rewards timing, party coordination and knowing how your skills work and interact. The problem is that there's not enough that's meaningful to use it all on.
Also the rebirth system NOW trumps most things for keneros reasons and one more - rebirthing makes grinding optional as you'll still progress even if you only have time for 80/15 or less a week.

Will also steal
[UB]Storyline[/UB] - Only generations I've done are g's 1 2 3 9 10 13 14 17 18 and 19, never really followed the story because I never felt particular engaged by the story. Probably won't even finish the rest because I can most likely kill everything naked and at that point its kind of boring.
Combat - Mabinogi's combat mechanics are my favorite next to Vindictus, and Dragon's dogma. Although I typically hate "tab-targetting" games the knock back and stun makes it more interesting and a lot of FUN.
Character Progression - Pros and cons. A lot of people wouldn't enjoy playing Mabinogi because character progression takes too long compared to other games. Skill trainings are time-consuming too. Good side is that you don't really need to make multiple characters for different classes.
Content - So many shits to do. There's always something to do despite what most people say. Although the problem is most likely the lack of challenge in those things to do.
PvP - Very fun, clean pvps are really fun even more so than just one hitting your enemy with rage impact + smash.
PvE - I like seeing my damage so actually killing stuff in NPC has always been fun for me. Although my favorite thing to kill is Barrier Spike Raid Boss.
Guild Support - Booooooooooo... Mabi needs to take note from other MMOs with guild systems. Guild hall should be customizable or some shit.
Non-Combat - I hate everyone but before I hated everyone socializing used to take up a large part of my mabi life.

If there is one thing that Mabinogi needs to improve on right now, its end-game content. Lots of new skills and skillsets and no content to compensate. Everything is too easy because of the power creep. No point in the mechanics that defined the game early on cause now all that matters is how much you hit.
I wanna pull up something a youtuber put up about last year. It's a video he made about MMO Raiding in games such as WoW in speculation of a Raid in the console game Destiny before it was released. While I don't think it will ever be implemented in Mabi, some of the points here pretty much explain why WoW was so successful.

Note: The video was made in focus of Destiny, hence all the references, but the point is quite easy to understand.
Basically, WoW had a plethora of complex end-game raids that gave the game its identity. It was its content that made it what it was.
With Mabi, there are a lot of unique features, but DevCat and Nexon never followed up on it. All we get now are stupid events and gachas with some fashion shit. So much potential wasted away.
